Helena Street Bakery: Santa Barbara, CA

On our last morning in Santa Barbara, Matt and I decided to head to a little place we'd noticed while exploring the city the day before: the Helena Street Bakery. As it was a Sunday morning (and Mother's Day), it was already pretty busy. Luckily, it seemed like most of the customers were picking up to-go orders so we were able to find a nice table and settled in for a delicious brunch.

After contemplating the menu while in the queue, we decided to go for the delicious looking buttermilk biscuit sandwiches since we'd seen so many of them leaving the kitchen. As a Virginia native with family in other southern states, I have a pretty high standard for biscuits. However, I had nothing to worry about - buttery, flaky, and solid without being dense... these were perfect.

Matt went for the "Green Eggs and Ham Sandwich" which came with a fried egg, black forest ham, jack cheese and a green harissa sauce. We were pretty impressed with this beauty - it wasn't too spicy and the harissa sauce complimented the ham nicely.

Meanwhile, I decided to go for a classic: the "Bacon, Cheddar and Egg Sandwich" which had a fried egg, bacon, cheddar cheese, breakfast greens, and a sun-dried tomato spread. Delicious!

I mean, just look at how colorful and delicious this looks... you're bound to have a good day if you start it off this way! If we hadn't been heading straight out of town to continue our adventure in LA, I would have happily popped back in for another delicious meal.

Open from 7am to 6pm, this lovely spot is surrounded by winery tasting rooms so could also be a nice place to grab a nibble before heading out to sample their wares. There's also a great selection of grab and go items that would be perfect for a picnic on the beach!
