Republique: Los Angeles, CA

For our first full day in Los Angeles, Matt and I had a loose schedule in mind that involved us checking out the La Brea Tar Pits. We had heard a lot about Republique and, when we realized how close the two spots were, it felt like the perfect opportunity to check it out!

With decor like this, it's no wonder Republique can be found on most "What to Eat in LA" lists. From the outside, I didn't realize it was so big! There were tons of tables so even though there was a bit of a queue when we arrived, it moved super quickly and we were soon seated at our table.

When you arrive, you place your order at the counter and are lead to your table. In this way, the line was a bit of a blessing since it gave us time to contemplate our choices. For drinks, we went for their "Green Juice" (made with kale, green apple, cucumber, parsley, celery and ginger) and an Americano.

For his meal Matt went for the mushroom toast, which, I must admit, I didn't have high hopes for. It was my own mistake for not properly reading the menu though! I thought this would be simply sauteed mushrooms on a bit of toast but what arrived blew that right out of the water. This mushroom toast had house-cured ham, spinach, hollandaise, red wine sauce and scrambled eggs. Matt was kind enough to leave off the sauce for this picture and for my first bite since I'm allergic... Cheers, Matt! His ultimate verdict was that this was a very tasty dish but he would have preferred a second piece of toast.

I ordered the kimchi fried rice that comes with beef short rib, pickled radish, sesame seeds and soft poached egg. I mean, look at this beauty... This was the most talked about dish in all of the reviews and YouTube videos I'd seen so I pretty much decided to order it months in advance. And it definitely didn't disappoint! They also gave us a gochujang based sauce to add over the top which added the perfect amount of spice.

How tasty do these plates look?! I love how colorful everything was and the eggs were cooked to perfection. This was the perfect meal for a late breakfast before wandering out to check out the sights. We arrived pretty late in the morning and there was still a bit of a queue so I can't imagine what it would be like at busier times. However, it was definitely worth waiting for!
