Charlie’s Tacos Truck: Los Angeles, CA

On our first night in Los Angeles, Matt and I decided to leave the car at the Airbnb and explore our Highland Park neighborhood by foot to get the lay of the land. Our hosts had left a binder full of meal suggestions for us and the one that caught our eye was Charlie's Tacos, a food truck parked on the corner of York Boulevard and N Avenue 50.

Since we were staying a short three block walk away, we thought that would be a perfect introduction to the neighborhood. We did a quick spin around the other shops and restaurants and then headed back to the truck as the sun started to set over the palm trees...

When we walked up, there was a decent sized line that made us feel like we'd definitely made the right decision. I also realized that my experience with food trucks is severely lacking so I was excited to give this a try!

The menu is printed all over the sides of the truck with a real range of products. They have everything you can think of from quesadillas and tacos to sopes and California burritos (which have fries inside). It was ridiculously hard to choose and we definitely felt a little overwhelmed by the different options. Ultimately we went with the tried and true method of ordering the items we heard people before us order..

For our order, we went for the carne asada fries, two pork carnitas tacos and two al pastor tacos. We thought that way, we'd get to try at least a couple of the ten filling options they offer. We collected our items and headed back to the Airbnb to enjoy our little picnic out on the deck. It was such a nice environment we wanted to make sure we were taking full advantage of it!

The carne asada fries were a bit silly, I'll admit. They were tasty but a bit meat heavy and we ultimately couldn't finish them. Also, when we ordered, they asked us if we wanted all the sauces... we said yes despite not knowing what those would be. As it turned out, they were the spiciest sauces on the planet! I have no idea what was in that salsa but it was pretty intense! Delicious, but intense!

For the tacos, we went with the al pastor and the carnitas options. I will always order al pastor if it's on offer since it's my absolute favorite taco filling. The sweetness from the pineapple combined with the spicy marinade is just heaven. The carnitas were a little more tame by comparison, which was probably our fault. We should have eaten those first and ended with the al pastor just because they have a bit more punch.

Overall though, we would definitely swing by Charlie's Tacos if we were in the area again - it was just super down to earth, no frills, tasty food. What's not to like about that? Their set up is also conveniently located next to a little playground so could be a nice option for all ages!
