Madame Nhu Restaurant: Sydney, Australia

After our busy day whale watching and exploring the Sydney Fish Market, we headed back to the hotel to relax and honestly thought we'd stay in the rest of the night. However, while contemplating our dinner options, we remembered we were close to a highly rated Vietnamese restaurant. Before our trip, I had scoured the internet for tips on restaurants and activities around all of the places we were visiting and popped them into a Google map so we could easily survey our options as we enjoyed our trip. I'm so glad we had this restaurant pinned as it turned out to be a total gem!

Located in the Surry Hills area of Sydney, Madame Nhu was only a fifteen minute walk from our hotel in Paddington. We were a bit worried as we approached because it turned out to be a fairly small restaurant tucked away on a pretty residential street. However, we were in luck and they had a table for two available. It had an almost street food feel with lovely ambiance. We started with some drinks and prawn crackers as we looked over the menu.

Matt decided to go for the Big Bowl Bun which seemed to be a mix of pretty much everything delicious on offer. It included BBQ duck, spring rolls, new nuong skewers, pickles, vermicelli noodles and nuoc cham sauce. It was pretty much out of this world on the scale of tastiness and I was a little jealous!

Meanwhile, I went for the Pho Tai because I can never resist it! The pho featured thinly sliced Hunter Valley rump and chuck steak along with noodles, green onions and other additions. This was a fantastically flavourful version and was exactly what I had hoped it would be. There's something so comforting about this big bowl of broth and I love the ability to customise it with herbs, lime and fish sauce.

We were unfortunately too full for dessert but we would highly, highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food in a lovely atmosphere. Our dinner came to around $60 AUD (about £35 GBP), which we thought was pretty reasonable for a city renowned for its high prices. Maybe we're just desensitised from living in London!
